The Court of Appeal in Sudan has overturned the sentence of Fardous Al Toum, one of the 10 female Christian students charged with “indecent dress”. She had been sentenced to a fine of 500 Sudanese pounds and 20 lashes.

Fardous Al Toum’s sentence was overturned by the Court of Appeal in Sudan in early October. The 19 year old had been sentenced to a fine of 500 Sudanese pounds and 20 lashes for wearing "indecent dress” in July 2015.  She was among 10 other female Christian students who stood trial for the charge of “indecent dress”.

Fardous Al Toum was arrested by the Public Order Police (POP) in Khartoum together with 11 other female Christian students on 25 June. Ten of them were charged with "indecent dress", under Article 152 of Sudan’s 1991 Criminal Act, while the other two were released. The trials for eight of the other students have concluded, while one, Rehab Omer Kakoum has appealed against the 500 Sudanese pounds ($83) she was sentenced to.

No further action is requested from the UA network. Many thanks to all who sent appeals.
