What's happening in Burma/Myanmar?

In recent months the people of Burma have suffered three heavy blows: the brutal crackdown following mass demonstrations in September 2007; a flawed constitutional referendum designed to perpetuate the rule of the military dictatorship; and the humanitarian disaster of Cyclone Nargis. At the same time, a military offensive by the army, known as tatmadaw, has been waged against ethnic Karen civilians in eastern Burma. An estimated 150,000 people have been displaced, more have been killed, forced to work as laborers and porters for the army, many have had their homes, livestock and crops confiscated or destroyed.

Amnesty International judges that these actions constitute crimes against humanity, as defined under international law, and is campaigning to pressure on the Burmese regime at all levels. AITEN and the Asia-Pacific Youth Network appeal to you to join our campaigns. Tell your friends, attend the concert, sign and send cards protesting the actions of the Burmese military. Amnesty International has more than 45 years experience of this kind of work. We know that by acting together we do make a difference in even apparently hopeless situations. Join us!
