I therefore urge you to:

• Respect and protect the right of human rights defenders and lawyers to conduct their work without hindrance, intimidation or harassment, in line with the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders, the Declaration of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on human rights defenders, the UN Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers and other human rights standards.
• Ensure that the rights to freedom of expression, assembly and association, as enshrined in the ECHR and ICCPR, are respected.
• Ensure that all human rights violations against human rights defenders, lawyers and journalists are promptly, thoroughly, independently and impartially investigated, and that suspected perpetrators of such violations are brought to justice in a trial which meets international standards of fairness.
• Refrain from threats, allegations and unsubstantiated accusations, including labeling human rights defenders who solely peacefully exercise their right to freedom of expression, as “terrorists” or “extremists”.
