米国の人権派弁護士で環境保護活動家のスティーブン・ドンジガーさんが、900日以上にわたる自宅軟禁を強いられています。
ドンジガーさんは1993年、米国の石油大手シェブロンが、エクアドルの先住民族の土地に不法に石油を投棄し、それにより深刻な被害を受けた住民が起こした裁判で、原告の弁護団に加わり、勝訴を勝ち取りました。
しかし、この裁判で賠償金95億ドル（約一兆円）の支払いを命じられたシェブロンは、その報復として、米国でドンジガーさんを含む弁護団、支援するNGOらを相手に訴訟を起こしました。
2021年10月、裁判官の独立性、客観性、公平性の欠如に対する深刻な懸念があったにもかかわらず、ドンジガーさんは6カ月の禁固刑を言い渡され、現在も自宅軟禁の状態にあります。
一方、シェブロンはいまだに賠償金の支払いをしておらず、エクアドルでの人権侵害、環境破壊に関して何の責任もとっていません。環境問題への取り組みが企業にも求められている今、企業に批判的な弁護士や市民社会組織などを黙らせることを目的としたこのシェブロンの対応は、到底、容認できるものではありません。
このイベントでは、ドンジガーさんご本人をお招きし、弁護士として彼が標的となり嫌がらせを受けている理由やその背景、およびシェブロンとの闘いの重要性について、お話しいただきます。
Steven Donziger succesfully fought the big oil company Chevron in court after they dumped oil on indigenous lands in Ecuador. Now, in apparent retaliation for his work on behalf of those indigenous communities, he has been under house arrest for more than 900 days total. The detention follows a long-running smear campaign against Steven Donziger by Chevron. Despite serious concerns over the lack of independence, objectivity and impartiality of the judge involved in the proceedings, Steven Donziger was sentenced on 1 October to six months in prison. He served 45 days in prison and Amnesty International mobilized globally. After Amnesty activists took action, he was let our of prison early, and is currently serving the rest of his sentence under house arrest again. In the meantime, Chevron is yet to pay for damage they have caused and were ordered to pay for -- $9.5 billion US dollars!
We have organized an online event with Steven Donziger, who will talk about his work for the Indigenous people in Ecuador, why he is being targeted and harassed and why it is so important that we support him in his struggle.
