6月16日、「変革のための市民連合」党の党首ジェイムソン・ティムバさんを含むメンバー79人が当局に逮捕され、勾留された。彼らは、「アフリカ子どもの日」を記念して、党首宅に集まっていた。79人のうち、1人は保釈、未成年者2人は釈放されたが、残りの76人は、「公共の場での暴力や秩序を乱す行動を煽る意図を持って集合した」として、6月17日に起訴され、裁判を待っているところだ。当局は直ちに無条件で76人を釈放し、政治的意図による起訴を取り下げるべきだ。
裁判を傍聴した党メンバー数人が警察官に暴行を受け、3人が勾留中の仲間の釈放を求めて逮捕された。3人は、100米ドル（約15000円）ずつの保釈金を支払った後、釈放された。
6月27日、ムナンガグワ大統領はジンバブエ・アフリカ民族同盟・愛国戦線の中央委員会で演説し、「特に地域や世界の国を挙げての行事が実施される際、虚偽情報を流布し、無秩序な行為を扇動しようとする野党の過激分子に対して警告を発し、そのような行為には断固とした処置を講ずる」と述べた。
6月28日、情報・宣伝・放送大臣は、「野党内の犯罪的、日和見主義的要素、幾人かの政治家と複数のNGOへの警告だ」として、「無秩序と破壊を引き起こし、司法の執行を妨げる者は、逮捕される」と述べた。
6月29日、全国民主ワーキンググループのメンバーが無許可の会合を開いたとしてハラレのクワザナで逮捕された。グループは、恵まれない家族を支援するための月例の募金活動中だった。7月3日には、中部の町ゴクウェの報道機関「コミュニティーボイス・ジンバブエ」の6人が逮捕された。
ジンバブエでは、8月17日にハラレで開催予定の南部アフリカ開発共同体首脳会議・政府サミットを控え、表現の自由、集会と結社の権利などの人権の行使に規制が強まっている。

Dear Honourable Ziyambi Ziyambi,
On 16 June, police arrested and arbitrarily detained 79 Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) members, including interim party leader Jameson Timba, who had gathered at Jameson Timba’s house to commemorate the International Day of the African Child. The arrest and arbitrary detention of the CCC members while exercising their rights to freedom of association, expression and peaceful assembly is deeply concerning.
During their arrest, the police used baton sticks and fired teargas at the group, resulting in injuries; including an extensive injury to one member which required surgery. 79 members were originally arrested and remanded, but two minors have since been released and one person granted bail. On 17 June, the 79 members who remain detained were charged with “gathering with intent to promote public violence and disorderly conduct’ and held for over 48 hours in custody before appearing before a court on 18 June, in violation of the country’s Criminal Procedure and Evidence act which states that ‘anypersonwho is arrested or detained must brought before acourtas soon as possible and in any event not later than forty-eight hours after the arrest took place or the detention began,’. On 27 June, the group were denied bail on the grounds that they will ‘commit similar offences if released’. On 17 July, the 76 members’ bail application was dismissed by the High Court.
I have noted a worrying trend of suppression of civic space and intimidation and harassment of activists and opposition politicians ahead of the 44th Ordinary SADC Summit of Heads State and Government, due to take place on 17 August. Your government has warned against “criminal and opportunistic elements within the opposition, certain politicians, and some civil society organizations” and threatened to use law enforcement to crackdown on human rights.
In light of the above, I call on you to ensure the immediate and unconditional release of the 76 Citizens Coalition for Change members (including Jameson Timba) and drop all charges against them as they are detained solely for the peaceful exercise of their human rights. I further urge you and the authorities to uphold and ensure respect for the human rights of everyone in the country including the rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly as enshrined in Zimbabwe’s Constitution and the country’s international human rights obligations including under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights.
