The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is home to huge reserves of the world's most desired rare minerals - including cobalt, gold, high-grade copper, tin, tantalum, tungsten, and coltan. Its minerals have always been targeted and extracted by foreign powers, leaving the DRC poor and conflict-ridden although it has so much wealth. Today, the huge boost in demand and production of rechargeable batteries, essential in everyday technological devices as well as the transition to renewable energy from fossil fuels, has companies' and states' eyes on the DRC's cobalt.
Amnesty has reported on serious human rights abuses in the DRC including child labor, forced evictions, and unlawful killings. We cannot talk about a just transition to renewable energy without talking about the DRC.
We invited two experts from Amnesty International East and Southern Africa to help us understand the situation in DRC. Join us in an effort to understand our relationship to the human rights abuses suffered by the Congolese people.
コンゴ民主共和国（DRC）は、コバルト、金、銅、錫、タンタル、タングステン、コルタンなど、世界で最も希少な鉱物資源の膨大な埋蔵量を誇ります。しかし、これらの鉱物は常に外国勢力の標的となり、採掘されてきたため、コンゴ民主共和国ではその資源の豊かさにもかかわらず貧困と紛争が蔓延ってきました。最近では、日常生活に欠かせない電子機器や化石燃料から再生可能エネルギーへの移行に不可欠な充電式電池の需要と生産量の爆増により、コンゴ民主共和国産のコバルトが世界の企業と各国政府にとても重要となっています。
アムネスティ・インターナショナルは、児童労働、強制立ち退き、違法な殺害など、コンゴ民主共和国における深刻な人権侵害について報告してきました。再生可能エネルギーへの公正な移行は、コンゴ民主共和国を抜きにしては語れません。
